Link building without the nonsense.

20 September 2026 · Abdullah Rajpot · 6 min read

Link building is the work of earning links to your site from other websites. It remains one of the strongest signals a search engine has, and it is also the part of the job with the worst reputation, because a whole industry grew up selling links that do nothing.

This article separates the two.

Why links still count

A link is a recommendation. When a website points at your page, it is spending a little of its own credibility to say that page was worth reading. Search engines have used that idea since the beginning, and although the mechanics have changed enormously, the principle has not.

Consequently the useful question is never "how do I get more links". It is "who would genuinely want to point at this, and why". Links are one signal among several, so the other signals a search engine uses matter just as much.

What makes a link worth having

Not all links are equal, and the differences are large enough to matter.

  • Relevance. A link from a site about your subject counts for far more than one from a general directory.
  • Trust. A well established publication carries weight that a brand new blog does not.
  • Placement. A link inside the body of an article beats one buried in a footer that appears on every page.
  • Honesty. A link somebody chose to add is worth more than one you paid for, and search engines are reasonably good at telling the difference.

One genuinely relevant link can outweigh fifty from sites nobody reads. That is the single most useful thing to understand about link building, because it changes what you spend your time on.

Link building methods that actually work

Four approaches suit smaller businesses, and none of them requires a budget.

Be worth citing

Publish something other people need to reference. Original data from your own work, a genuinely thorough guide, a tool, a template. If your best page is the same as everybody else's best page, nobody has a reason to link to yours instead.

Use the relationships you already have

Suppliers, partners, trade bodies, local organisations you sponsor, clients who are happy with you. Many of these have a website with a partners or members page. Asking is free, and these links are relevant by definition.

Be a source

Journalists and bloggers need people who know things. If you can answer questions in your field clearly and quickly, you become useful to them. This is slow, and it produces the strongest links of any link building method.

Fix what is already pointing at you

People mention businesses without linking, and links break when pages move. Finding a mention of your company that is not a link, and politely asking, is the easiest win available. So is finding a broken link on a site that used to point at you.

What to avoid

Buying links is against every search engine's guidelines. The risk is not only a penalty. It is that you spend money on links that were never going to work.

Similarly, mass directory submissions, comment links, and networks of sites built purely to link at each other are all obvious to detect and have been for years. Meanwhile, exchanging links with one relevant partner is normal business; doing it a hundred times is a pattern.

The honest test is simple. Would you be comfortable explaining this link to the search engine that found it? If not, do not build it.

The words inside the link

The visible text of a link tells a search engine what the page on the other end is about. A link reading "boiler replacement costs" says more than one reading "click here", and it helps the reader decide whether to follow it.

You rarely control this on somebody else's site, and that is fine. Where you do control it, on your own pages, use the words that describe the destination honestly. Where you are asking somebody for a link, suggesting sensible wording is normal and usually welcome.

One warning. If every link pointing at a page uses the identical commercial phrase, that pattern looks manufactured, because natural linking is untidy. Variety is not a tactic here; it is simply what real recommendations look like.

How long link building takes

Longer than anything else in search engine optimization, because you do not control the other side. A relationship that produces a link might take months to develop, and a piece of research might sit unnoticed until somebody finds it.

Because of that, link building is the wrong first move for most sites. Fix the technical foundations, write pages worth linking to, and then start asking. Asking people to link to a weak page is how the industry got its reputation.

Measuring link building without fooling yourself

Counting total links flatters you, since most of them are worthless. Better questions are narrower. How many relevant sites linked to you this quarter? Did the pages you were trying to strengthen actually move? Is anybody arriving through those links?

That last one deserves attention. A link that sends real visitors has already paid for itself, whatever a search engine does with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is link building?

It is the work of earning links to your website from other sites. Search engines treat a link as a recommendation, so links from relevant, trusted sites help pages rank. The work is really about giving people a genuine reason to point at what you published.

Do links still matter for rankings?

Yes. The mechanics have changed a great deal, and low quality links now count for little or nothing, but a recommendation from a relevant and trusted site is still one of the strongest signals available. The bar for what counts has risen rather than disappeared.

Should I buy links?

No. Buying links breaks every major search engine guideline, and the bigger practical risk is spending money on links that were never going to work. If you would be uncomfortable explaining a link to the search engine that found it, do not build it.

How many links do I need?

There is no number, because quality varies so widely. One genuinely relevant link from a respected site in your field can outweigh fifty from directories nobody reads. Counting total links is one of the least useful measures in the whole discipline.

What is the easiest link building win?

Finding places that already mention your business without linking, and politely asking for a link. The relationship exists, the mention exists, and only the link is missing. Recovering links that broke when a page moved is nearly as easy.

How long does link building take to show results?

Longer than any other part of search engine optimization, because the other side decides. Relationships take months to build and published research can sit unnoticed for a while. This is why it is usually the wrong first move on a site with other problems.

Are directory links worth anything?

A small number of genuinely relevant ones can be, particularly industry bodies and local listings that people actually use. Mass submissions to general directories are worth nothing and have been for many years, and they can make a link profile look manipulated.

Can I do link building without a budget?

Yes. The four approaches that work best for smaller businesses all cost time rather than money: publishing something worth citing, using existing relationships, being a useful source for journalists, and recovering mentions and broken links that already point your way.
